You’ve probably heard that the biggest fear most people have is public speaking. Well, for many people their fear gets dialed up even higher when they’re in a TV studio about to be interviewed live.
Nerve wracking, right?
We are just plain scared that we’ll say the wrong thing or freeze and say nothing at all. I say “we” because I’ve been there. Though I’d worked in Media for more than 3 decades, my comfort zone was behind the scenes. Way behind the scenes in a dark edit room, with no windows. But, here’s the thing. Doing publicity – marketing your book in the media – is part of the job description of an author. So as the author of a parenting book I had to do live TV interviews.
So I needed to find a way to get comfortable with the fear. Weird way to look at it, I know. But the way I figured, fear wasn’t going to just disappear. I had to accept it and get out there and talk about the message of my book in spite of the fear.
What helped me was making an important mindset shift, and I truly believe this can help you as well.
Instead of focusing on yourself, think about the people out there in the audience who need your message. It’s all about them. Imagine that what you’re carrying is not a message but instead it’s food. You’re bringing that food to a room full of hungry people. They won’t get the food unless you show up. Yes, you’re nervous. I get that. But people are hungry for the resources only you can bring: your message, your wisdom, and your practical advice. So feed them.
Don’t let fear hold you back from nourishing the people who need your gifts.
The bottom line is this: If your nerves get the best of you, there is just no way you can express your key message clearly and help the people whose lives could be changed by that message. In other words – if you can’t convey your main points, you won’t address their pain points.
Focus on the need for your message and how you can help people through your media appearance. It’s not about you. It’s about harnessing the power of Media to reach the people who will be served by your message and making a positive impact on their lives.
