Over the last several months I’ve been studying what book marketers teach about promoting your book and I’ve come to a few conclusions. First of all, there are a lot of lovely people in the online book marketing world on podcasts and blogs, devoting their time and wisdom to helping authors sell their books. There are some great strategies out there to help with book sales, and that’s a very good thing.

But as someone who has worked behind the scenes in Media for decades, and became a bestselling author because of a single media interview, online book marketing concerns me. It can be expensive, time consuming, and complicated, and in the end is about one thing: selling books. Then after marketing your book, if you become a best selling author there are other benefits such as gaining credibility, growing your audience, launching a speaking career or getting paid a lot more to speak. In other words, with traditional book marketing you can’t really reap the benefits until your book becomes a bestseller.

However, simply by virtue of doing media interviews, you can gain all those benefits before you become a bestselling author. You can increase your influence, income, and impact in Media. And it’s free.

In fact, a Media interview is a marketing asset that somebody else pays to create.

If you appear on a nationally syndicated talk show, a hundred thousand dollars could be the budget for producing, taping, editing, distributing, and promoting that episode. You get access to professional producers, lighting, audio, cameras, editors, and a promotion budget. But you don’t have to pay anything and you get to use that interview in your marketing for as long as you like. (And no, you don’t need to hire a publicist to get you that interview either.)

The power of media is not limited to just selling books. Media is marketing, the kind of marketing that can be a game changer for your book, your message, and your mission.

P.S. You’d never want to lose an opportunity to market your book in national Media, right? Well that’s exactly what happens to many nonfiction authors who get a call out of the blue from someone in the Media. They typically don’t know what to say, or how to express the 3 key pieces of information that producer, journalist, or columnists needs to know before booking an interview. But that doesn’t need to happen to you. I’ve created a Free PDF Media Success Quick Start Guide: Ready for Publicity in 30 Minutes that you can get today.
